How much does a Japan trip cost from India? 2026–27 budget breakdown

Updated 17 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

Kyoto street at dusk with traditional houses

A first 8-day trip to Japan from India costs about ₹1.35 lakh per person on a tight budget, ₹1.9–2 lakh mid-range, and ₹3 lakh or more for comfort travel. These figures include return flights, hotels on twin sharing, trains, food and sightseeing. The biggest swing factors are your travel month and how early you book flights.

Below is the full breakdown, and what our group trip includes for comparison.

Prices are planning estimates for October 2026 – April 2027, converted at ¥1 = ₹0.65. The market rate in mid-October 2026 was about ₹0.60. We plan with ₹0.65 to cover forex card and bank margins.

What each line includes

Flights: ₹60,000–₹1,10,000 return

Non-stop flights connect Mumbai and Delhi with Tokyo. One-stop flights via Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore or the Gulf are often cheaper. Booking 3–4 months ahead saves the most.

Prices jump for cherry-blossom weeks (late March to early April), Indian summer holidays and Diwali. Fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka (an "open-jaw" ticket) so you don't waste a day going back.

Visa: about ₹2,500

From 1 July 2026, Japan raised visa fees for most nationalities, but Indian nationals still pay ₹500 for a single- or multiple-entry visa. The VFS service charge is extra, so most people pay around ₹2,500 in total. See our Japan visa guide.

Hotels: ₹27,000–₹80,000 for 7 nights

Japanese business hotels are small but spotless and well located. As a rough guide, a twin room costs:

  • Budget: about ¥12,000 a night (business hotel, slightly away from the centre)
  • Mid-range: about ¥20,000 a night (3★–4★ near a main station)
  • Comfort: ¥35,000 and up (4★–5★, or a ryokan with dinner)

One night in a Hakone ryokan with dinner and breakfast often costs as much as two city nights, and it's worth it.

Trains: ₹13,000–₹19,500

A reserved Nozomi bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto costs about ¥14,170. Add the train to Hakone, Kyoto to Osaka via Nara, and the airport train at the end, and you spend roughly ¥20,000. The national rail pass costs ¥53,000 for 7 days from 1 October 2026, so it doesn't pay off on this route. Green Car (first class) adds about 40–50%.

Food: ₹18,000–₹52,000

  • Budget (about ¥3,500/day): convenience-store breakfasts, ramen or curry-rice lunches, one sit-down dinner
  • Mid-range (about ¥6,000/day): café breakfasts, set lunches, izakaya or Indian dinners
  • Comfort (about ¥10,000/day): a kaiseki dinner, sushi counters, hotel breakfasts

Vegetarian travellers usually spend a little more, because Indian restaurants cost more than noodle shops.

Sightseeing: ₹6,500–₹23,000

Temples and shrines are cheap (often ¥500 or free), and Fushimi Inari is free. teamLab, Shibuya Sky, the Hakone ropeway and boat, and Universal Studios Japan are the big-ticket items. Universal Studios alone can be a third of the comfort budget.

Taxes you pay in India and Japan

  • TCS on overseas tour packages is now a flat 2% from the first rupee (from 1 April 2026; previously 5% and 20%). You can claim it back against your income tax.
  • GST of 5% applies to tour packages bought from an Indian company.
  • Japan's departure tax rose to ¥3,000 for international departures from 1 July 2026. It's normally included in your air ticket.

Package vs do-it-yourself

Our Japan Golden Route group trip starts at ₹1,89,900 per person on twin sharing. It includes:

  • flights from Mumbai
  • 7 nights in 3★/4★ hotels, including Hakone
  • daily breakfast and three Indian dinners
  • the bullet train
  • an English-speaking guide on sightseeing days
  • visa filing and insurance

That's close to the mid-range DIY total, without the planning hours. You also have a guide on the day Fuji closes or a train is cancelled. GST and TCS are extra, as with any Indian tour package.

DIY makes sense if you've travelled abroad a lot, enjoy planning and want full flexibility. A package makes sense if it's your first time in Japan, you want vegetarian meals sorted, or you're travelling with parents.

Five ways to cut the cost

  1. Avoid cherry-blossom weeks and Golden Week (late April – early May). Go in May, June, October or early December.
  2. Book flights 3–4 months out and compare one-stop options.
  3. Skip the rail pass on a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip.
  4. Eat lunch as your main meal. Set lunches cost half of dinner.
  5. Stay near stations, not in the most famous districts.
