Maldives beach villa vs water villa: which should you book?
Updated 5 Oct 2026 · 1 min read
Short answer: book a water villa for the views and a beach villa for space and value. If you have 4 nights, split them 2 and 2.
Side by side
| Beach villa | Water villa | |
|---|---|---|
| View | Garden or beach | Open lagoon from bed |
| Privacy | Good, depends on spacing | Usually better |
| Swimming | Walk into the sea | Ladder from your deck |
| Kids under 6 | Easy | Needs constant watching |
| Price | Lower | Typically noticeably higher |
Pick a water villa if
- It's your honeymoon or a once-in-a-while trip.
- You love waking up to the lagoon and swimming off your deck.
Pick a beach villa if
- You're travelling with small children.
- You want more indoor space or a garden shower.
- Budget matters more than the view.
The split-stay trick
Most resorts let you change villa type mid-stay. Two beach nights followed by two water nights costs less than four water nights, and the move feels like an upgrade halfway through.
Before you book, ask
- How far is the villa from the house reef?
- Sunrise or sunset side? Sunset villas usually cost more.
- Is the transfer by speedboat or seaplane? Seaplanes fly in daylight only.
